The meeting started at 6:37 PM with Pres Jon welcoming guests, Mohan, Burwood Rotaract president Athreya Kannan, Miriam, Marilee, Anna Maria and Patricia Abraham ( apologies for any spelling errors). Apologies by Peter Moore as Rosa’s relative had passed away and by Walter

Fifi is not well and is going back into hospital

Reports

Robert spoke about the youth programs and the possibility that the club may sponsor to Smith’s family nominees to RYPEN at a cost of $325 for each participant. A request has been made that we somehow assist through the Rotary global Grants scholarship an applicant who has obtained a place at Cambridge. Robert is not aware as to the mechanics of this process.

The summer sign school has been put off until the middle of the year. To assist the visitors to understand the acronyms and the Rotary programs Robert explained various youth programs

Sam spoke about the early Bird Café. We did not use the trailer and won’t need to use in the immediate future. At the moment we need for there to set up and for at the end and that should be adequate

Fred on Tuesday afternoon is meeting with Council about homeless connect a function where they provide back packs and other items to the homeless. Fred is also meeting with Barry Gobbe from Western Sydney Homeless. Burwood Council is doing a census of the homeless in the Burwood area and will give us their data. Fred had a meeting with Renga and in one day he redesigned our brochure using overseas contacts. Sanjay from the Granville club is going to speak to us at our meeting in March

Fred wants a planning night for his year as President. He would like the 5 prospective members to help out and put forward what they want to do through Rotary

Guest speaker

The current Burwood Rotaract president Athreya Kannan gave us an insight into scams. He works for ZIP. One of the problems is that organisations can purchase information from apps (apart from financial apps) and then scammers can utilise this information. One of the issues is being sent emails trying to get you to download Quicksupport and Anydesk apps. This gives access to your device which enables them to create fake credit card accounts in your name so ignore any emails suggesting the downloading of these apps. 90% of the scams are through India but they come from a number of places across the world. If you have been scampi you should call the police plus the bank to cancel all your accounts. There are scam websites that are set up and are only about for a short period of time close down and then take your money

if you have been scanned then contact thing all credit companies is needed to resolve the matter and not have an adverse credit rating and that can take about 3 months

Sergeants session

Lloyd went about finding everyone including Pres Jon, Sana (twice), Paul, Theo, Tim, Fred, Sam, Robert and David even finding one of our members just because of their occupation.

Raffle winner David

Virtual Train Ride to End Polio

It used to be that trains were part of the polio problem, as they gave the poliovirus the perfect way to rapidly spread far and wide. Then, in 2001, trains became part of the solution, with all children aboard Indian trains being immunised. Now, Pakistan has adopted the same strategy, helping to ensure that no child is left unvaccinated

Report from Gingoog by PP Walter Bock

Dear Friends and supporters,

I received another email from Juvie and MinPRA in Gingoog. Somehow, miraculously they avoided much damage to themselves. On the compound it appears two fruit trees came down and the other crop was damaged. On the mountain property the damage was even less. They hate asking for help but they would like to help the island of Dinagat where Vera took a team on a SewAID Mission a couple of years ago.

The Secrets of Scams – Athreya Kannan

My name is Athreya Kannan and I work for Zip which is a credit company and we often get calls

from customers who have been scammed online or over the phone. I, therefore, wrote this up

to spread awareness of these scams so we can be more vigilant.

The Year is 1991, two busses full of Rotary Exchange Students enter a parking lot in Sydney after 3 weeks around Australia on the “Capricorn Ramble Tour”. Saying goodbye was heart-breaking, knowing that we would soon be back home and maybe never see each other again.

Jumping to September 2021, downtown Frankfurt on a Friday afternoon in brilliant weather. Stepping out of the car to greet 3 people I have not seen for 30 year in front of their hotel.
