The Rotary Club of Burwood has created the 50th Anniversary Charitable Trust in 1991, with the overall charitable purpose of "relieving poverty and the advancement of education or any other matter beneficial to the community".

The Trust in the main achieves these purposes through the provision of two forms of financial assistance, namely:
  1. A Pickett Scholarship, being financial assistance extending over two or more consecutive years; and
  2. Blain Awards, being one-off financial grants.

The Award and Scholarship are awarded to persons who satisfy the Trustees that they are financially disadvantaged and are undertaking some form of further study/sporting endeavour beneficial to themselves and to the community in general.

By way of example, the Trustees have in recent times given Blain Awards for assistance with overseas study and overseas gymnastics training and competition.

The awardees do not have to be school aged children and in fact a number have been for post-graduate study. However, it is not uncommon for school aged children with excellent academic records or sporting qualifications to seek to improve their abilities through further study or training in their sporting field. Funding of these activities may be a factor which may preclude such activities being followed through with and in this regard, the Blain Award or Pickett Scholarship are intended to assist in enabling these things to happen.

Not all applicants are interviewed but all applications are acknowledged by the Trustees. The Trust only interviews those applicants it considers to be possible awardees and it is therefore important that all supporting documentation is provided as part of your application to ensure your application proceeds to the interview stage.
