MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Afternoon everyone,

Hope you've had a great weekend!

Few things coming up and a lot to discuss tomorrow at the next meeting!

I would like to remind you all to please pay your Club Membership Fees as soon as possible and to please let me know if you're interested in buying a Club Shirt that Dennise Herrick has kindly organised for us.

The shirt is mandatory for all members and would be a great addition to all of our local efforts and at District events.

Our next speaker is Ken EnderbyPresident of Climate Action Burwood/Canada Bay

Ken Enderby has degrees in history and economics from Macquarie and Sydney Universities respectively. In 2020, he completed a year-long course on
climate science at Queensland University.

Ken has been a campaigner for peace, human rights and economic development for over 40 years, working on projects in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. During the Cold War he smuggled messages and literature to political dissidents in Poland, East Germany and Czechoslovakia.

He later reported on the wars in El Salvador and Guatemala, as well as on the Arab-
Israeli conflict. He has undertaken study trips to places as diverse as North
Korea and the Gaza Strip.

Up until his retirement in 2018, Ken was the Head Teacher of Career Pathways at Bankstown TAFE. Since then, he has focused his attention on climate change, and is currently the president of Climate Action Burwood/Canada Bay. He also works with Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project to train people in the mechanics of climate science.

Ken has written for both radio and television, and is the author of the novel Trail of Deceit, published in 2011. More recently, he is the author of Climate Myths and How to Respond to Them, which looks at 94 misconceptions about
climate change and renewable energy.

In what promises to be a very interesting and thought-provoking discussion, I encourage all of you to attend and bring some questions!

Upcoming:

6 November 2023 - Club Meeting w/ Ken Enderby, President, Climate Action Burwood/Canada Bay

20 November 2023 - Sally Sitou MP, Member for Reid

Hugo Robinson

Concord rotary & burwood rotary debate night

A big thank you to everyone who attended the return of the Concord Rotary v Burwood Rotary Debate Night at Massey Park.

I think it was absolutely fantastic and such a hoot!

Even with a homeground advantage, Burwood Rotary held its own and was only brought down by one point.

We had to argue that the Hokey Pokey is not what it's all about and I want to specifically shout out the amazing Dennise Herrick and Anna-Marie Sanni for joining me in our strident defence that there is more to life than the Hokey Pokey.

You were both incredibly funny and blew us all away!

A big thanks also goes to Phil and the crew at Concord Rotary for organising the night. I can't wait for the next one!

Eurella Community Services Trivia Fundraiser

Congratulations to two of our most amazing Club Members, Patricia Abraham and Anna-Marie Sanni on an amazing trivia night for Eurella Community Services the other night!

The organisation, passion and effort that went into that fantastic evening is truly remarkable.

The turn out was fantastic and was great to see a good table of strong Burwood Rotarians!

Well done to both of you and thank you so much on behalf of the community for the work that you do.

Burwood rotary does the burwood council fogo bbq

Last week Burwood Rotary lent a hand at the launch of the Burwood FOGO scheme.

FOGO stands for Food Organica and Garden Organics and implements a second bin to collect these waste types to stop it from going to landfill.

Thank you to John, Keith, Alf and Fuad for your efforts on the day in getting the BBQ up and running.

Apart from the money we raised, we got to talking to some fantastic locals who were interested in Rotary and some expressed interest in joining the Club!
Burwood Rotary with Mayor John Faker and Burwood General Manager Tommaso Briscese
All smiles at the BBQ!

Report from Gingoog by PP Walter Bock

Dear Friends and supporters,

I received another email from Juvie and MinPRA in Gingoog. Somehow, miraculously they avoided much damage to themselves. On the compound it appears two fruit trees came down and the other crop was damaged. On the mountain property the damage was even less. They hate asking for help but they would like to help the island of Dinagat where Vera took a team on a SewAID Mission a couple of years ago.

Rotary Youth Exchange - making a difference - Reflections from a Reunion 30 years later.

The Year is 1991, two busses full of Rotary Exchange Students enter a parking lot in Sydney after 3 weeks around Australia on the “Capricorn Ramble Tour”. Saying goodbye was heart-breaking, knowing that we would soon be back home and maybe never see each other again.

Jumping to September 2021, downtown Frankfurt on a Friday afternoon in brilliant weather. Stepping out of the car to greet 3 people I have not seen for 30 year in front of their hotel.
