What is PRISCA?
PRISCA, or the Primary Schools' Citizenship Awards is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Burwood that recognizes Year 5 and 6 school students from the Inner West, West and South Western Sydney areas, who are nominated by their schools for demonstrating leadership skills and an outstanding commitment to the community.
These students are presented with a citation and award at an evening awards ceremony held in Burwood or at their own school's end of year assembly, where their contributions to our community are recognised. The awards do not focus on sporting or academic achievements, but award acts of good citizenship.
The awards are presented in recognition of outstanding qualities of:
- Leadership – Positive Attitudes
- Co-operation – Reliability and Trust
- Consideration - Caring for Others
The Event
In 2024, the PRISCA Awards ceremony will be held on 4 November 2024. Schools will be invited to nominate two students prior to 14 October 2024, following which successful nominees will be contacted to inform them of the award.
In 2024, we are proud to confirm that we will once again hold a central awards ceremony where citations and awards are presented, and families, friends, and teachers involved in the 2023 awards ceremony will all be warmly encouraged to attend our 2024 awards ceremony where the student's citation will be read out, and the student will be recognised together with the awardees from 2024.
History
The PRISCA awards night was started by the Rotary Club of Burwood in 1991, and has been continued by both the Rotary Club and the Rotaract Club of Burwood for the past 30 years.
In the last 16 years, we have presented more than 600 children with awards, and raised an estimated $30,000.00 for charities and charitable causes on the awards nights. More than 3,000 attendees have heard from guest speakers including Olympians and Paralympians, actors, celebrities, community leaders and professionals.
How can you be involved?
We'd love for you to be involved! If your school currently nominates students for PRISCA, please ask your year 5 / 6 co-ordinator to put you in touch with the coordinator, and ask how they select students for nomination.
If your school does not yet participate, please contact us below to request that your school be included in the awards night.
We are also always looking for sponsors for awards and prizes for our awardees (and as part of our fundraising initiatives) - if you would like to assist, no offer is too big or too small! Please contact us below and we would be delighted to discuss with you how you can best contribute.
And if you'd like to volunteer to help us run the event - please get in touch! It is a wonderful night where we celebrate the good work of our future community leaders, and we want to lead by example to provide a rewarding event.
