Guest speaker
Theo introduced the guest speaker Sanjeev Goyal. He has a Masters of science in aeronautical engineering and a diploma in information technology. He is the Director of community services at Granville Rotary club and can speak 4 languages. He is married and has 2 children, both of whom are doctors working in the hospital system. Both of them are recipients of the US President’s award for excellence. Sanjeev is well known in the community for being able to obtain grants for the benefits of his club. In the last 2 financial years he has applied for various grants for community organisations for values of $50,000 and $100,000 respectively in those 2 financial years and for the Rotary club has secured grants of up to $60,000.
Sanjeev explained that there are many Federal State and Local Government and Club grants available and he has been put on a subscription list so he is informed of the grants. One particular grant could have up to 1500 applicants so there is much competition. When he started he was getting 1/10 but nowadays is getting about 40 to 50% success rate. Using the trailer as an example you would have to explain how you are going to spend the grant get at least 2 quotations and for example if $10,000 is the maximum under the grant explain how we would get the balance of $5000. The Westconnex grant covering Burwood comes out every year and it finishes this year on 30 March 2022. The issues that need to be covered are health and safety, education and economic outcomes and environmental sustainability. You would need to address at least one of those matters to support the application.
An example of a grant obtained by Sanjeev was $5000 from the Department of multicultural New South Wales where they delivered food in June 2020 and travelled up to 1000 km in doing that. Currently the club is doing a lot of food supply, promoting vaccination drive, booster shot and Rotary women welfare projects. Preparing an application is very time consuming as it takes him 2 to 3 weeks to prepare an application with there being a period of 2 to 3 months before being advised of the result.
