Meeting opened at 6 15 chaired by Acting President pp John Mansour

Welcome to Lillian and Jonathan Chen from Strokesafe

Introduced by pp Peter Moore

Lillian thanked us for the invitation to Speak

Lillian is a local and lives Strathfield. She speaks to local community groups. She acknowledges traditional owners of the land.

Lillian is a stroke survivor. At age 49 was relaxing in spa and later went down stairs and she felt very tired. Jonathon asked why she looked so angry. She felt tired and tried to stand up but fell over. Jonathan and her sons realised the problem. They called an ambulance. It arrived and went to Concord Hosp where she had a CT scan and diagnosed that  she had had a major stroke

She was rushed to RPA and was having major surgery within a couple of hours to remove a clot from her brain. Jonathon remembers waiting and when she woke up she was relieved that she was alive. The key was that her family had called the ambulance quickly. They are both pharmacists and decided to retire.

Globally 1 in 4 people will have some type of stroke.

Two types of strokes - ischaemic where an artery is blocked by a clot and hemorrhagic when a blood vessel bursts and floods the brain

Lillian now has some trouble with short term memory, but generally she has most of her facilities back. She retired to concentrate on her health.

Dear Rotarians,

The Rotary International Convention is the biggest event of the year and it’s coming to us in Australia, 27-31 May. Thousands of Rotary members and Rotaractors from across the globe will be arriving in Melbourne, giving us a tremendous opportunity to welcome, network and learn from fellow people of action.

Let’s show our Australian spirit while enjoying the extraordinary convention that will feature notable speakers, energising breakout sessions, and ample opportunities to brainstorm ideas for Doing Good in the World. Among the speakers and learning opportunities scheduled:

Keynote Speaker Leymah Gbowee, Nobel peace laureate from Liberia

Climate Activist Nakeeyat dramani sam of Ghana

Breakout Sessions on leadership. membership, service and projects, the environment , public image and more

Whether we're on the convention floor, in the House of Friendship, or at one of the exciting events planned by the Host Organising Committee, the 2023 Rotary convention is the ideal place to share ideas and expertise. It’s also our chance to be a champion for Rotary in Australia and make an impact that lasts far beyond four days in Melbourne.

So register today for savings! The reduced rate expires 31 March.

Report from Gingoog by PP Walter Bock

Dear Friends and supporters,

I received another email from Juvie and MinPRA in Gingoog. Somehow, miraculously they avoided much damage to themselves. On the compound it appears two fruit trees came down and the other crop was damaged. On the mountain property the damage was even less. They hate asking for help but they would like to help the island of Dinagat where Vera took a team on a SewAID Mission a couple of years ago.
